Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib is named for the six Persian water-wheels (chhe + harta) that were used to draw water from a large well sunk by Guru Arjan Dev. The gurdwara served as a source of water and refuge for travellers and locals and became a site of devotion. The modern complex includes the well area, sanctum and facilities for pilgrims.
